In Korea, which was called a sci-fi genre barren, the drama ‘Sea of Silence’ was released with the moon as the background. The work, which was released at a time when the status of K-contents was at its height, provoked a variety of reactions. In addition to being compared to ‘Squid Game’ and ‘Hell’, which caused global syndrome, there were also harsh criticisms for the result that was different from the existing science-fiction ones. Can ‘Sea of Silence’ be judged as a ‘failure’?

‘Sea of Silence’ (director Hang-yong Choi), released as a Netflix original series, is a sci-fi mystery thriller that tells the story of elite crew members who received a special mission from a near-future earth ravaged by the depletion of water, an essential resource, and left for a research base abandoned on the moon. . Based on the short film of the same name, which was director Choi Hang-yong’s graduation work, it draws attention in that it is set in an unfamiliar area of the moon and the secret Balhae base there. As it was adapted into an eight-episode series, writer Park Eun-kyo took charge of the screenplay, and actor Jung Woo-seong became the producer.

One of the reasons for the criticism pouring down on ‘Sea of Silence’ is the repetition of banal clichés. The work begins when elite crew members leave for the Balhae base in search of moon water that can save mankind. The Balhae base was permanently closed after the mysterious deaths of its researchers five years ago. The government is only trying to hide the truth of death. The crew, who arrive without any information, face the truth there and fall into confusion, and the number of victims increases one by one. People gathered in one place with their own stories, being trapped in a place where they can’t go, meeting a virus or an enemy to die, and the existence of a traitor hiding behind the scenes doesn’t feel new.

There are many reviews that the development is slow and “boring”. In a series that has to captivate viewers in the beginning, the impact of the first episode is the most important, but episodes 1 and 2 of ‘Sea of Silence’ have too many explanations, which stretches and loses tension. The full-fledged story starts from episode 3, so it tends to get the momentum of the play late. As Luna, who holds the key to the truth of the Balhae Base, is revealed, her immersion increases, but as the story unfolds within 24 hours until her mission is completed by 8 episodes, there is a lack of texture. There is also a lack of empathy between many characters due to the lack of emotional exchange.
